Agios Nikolaos is a harbour town in eastern Crete, set on the Gulf of Mirabello. At its centre lies Lake Voulismeni, joined to the sea by a short channel and ringed by cafés and tavernas.
The coast around the town is a string of small bays and beaches. A few kilometres to the north is the resort of Elounda, and across the water from it the small island of Spinalonga, with its Venetian fortress.
The nearest airport is Heraklion, about an hour's drive to the west.
